Former Penguin Ian Cole traded to Columbus

Columbus have acquired former Penguin Ian Cole from the Ottawa Senators for a 2020 3rd round pick and prospect Nick Moutrey. This is an interesting move for two reasons. It brings Ian Cole back to the Metropolitan Division to possibly play against the Penguins, and it also indicates that Columbus may move a D out as they currently have 9 NHL D on their roster.

The prospect Moutrey is nothing to be interested in and is just a contract add on. Cole is a bottom pairing D, despite what a lot of the Penguins media would have you believe, so this may not indicate that Jack Johnson is on the way out of the door, but Cole has the cup experience and he’s extremely solid if unspectacular. A nice add for Columbus.
