Three Takeaways: Penguins Beat Predators, 4-0

A Stanley Cup rematch with no shortage of entertainment on all facets of the game. Our three takeaways focus on three specific players tonight.

Olli On The Offensive

Goodness, Olli Maatta looks like a brand new hockey player. He seems faster. He seems more willing to shoot the puck on net. He is playing some fantastic hockey at this stage. He has two goals on the season already and on a night where the Penguins lost Ian Cole after he took a slap shot in the teeth, Maatta stepped up with the team already short a defenseman. The Finnish youngster was the best overall defenseman and has yet to look bad in a game yet.

No Worry, Murray

The franchise goaltender looked himself again Saturday. Matt Murray’s first shutout of the young season came after two sour performances in the team’s first two games. He turned away tons of quality chances and was calm and composed, something fans were used to seeing the past couple of seasons. Murray isn’t one to reward himself after a shutout as he will still say he could’ve been better. No, Murray, you really couldn’t have been. You shut out the Predators for the third straight game.

The Grim Reaver

Are you not entertained? Ryan Reaves went savage mode tonight on anything in a white and gold sweater. He fought Austin Watson, Cody McLeod and had two encounters with Scott Hartnell who declined both invitations. Oh, and he scored, too. He was rewarded by getting a shift with Sidney Crosby and made the most of it by going after Hartnell after he high-sticked Crosby. Reaves’ tone-setting came out of him tonight. These are the games he will thrive in and he  made his presence known Saturday
